A Sister’s Story of Harm in the Church and How She is Reclaiming the Sacred in Her Own Journey through Art
Sr. Danielle Victoria will share several art pieces she created through her journey of grief, after learning that her trusted spiritual director had allegedly assaulted a sister from her former community. Her story, along with Sr. Theresa Aletheia, is told in an audio documentary style through “Descent Into Light”, a podcast available wherever you get your podcasts. Unpacking her initial shock, denial, and anger in the darkness, the art she created held her in the mystery of her suffering. In the darkness, she encountered hope and a little way forward.
Sr. Danielle Victoria, along with Sr. Theresa Aletheia, are founders of the Sisters of the Little Way of Beauty, Truth, and Goodness, a private association of the faithful intending to become a religious institute in the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, in the United States.
They live a mission of listening and solidarity with people on the fringes of the Church, especially those who have been wounded, scandalized, or abused by members of the Church. They are the first religious community in the Church whose mission is explicitly dedicated to safeguarding, accompanying survivors, and educating about the dynamics of abuse in religious contexts.
