Fifty years ago, Catholics in Allentown, Pennsylvania, organized to bring help to families facing famine in Africa. That help came in the form of a small cardboard box, marking the beginning of “Operation Rice Bowl.” Today, as we celebrate CRS Rice Bowl’s 50th anniversary, the program is a tradition for millions of Catholics in the United States who continue to answer the Gospel call, supporting families experiencing hunger around the world.
This celebration of CRS Rice Bowl will contain a collection of music, reflections, and hymns lifting up our hearts with one voice for the life of the world. Each movement will be opened with a scriptural reading, a brief reflection and a featured statement from a designated speaker, followed by the music of the movement. At the close of the program, there will be a free-will offering to benefit Catholic Relief Services mission to alleviate global hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition. Refreshments in the lobby will follow.
